It all started in the field with horses grazing on the green…

Under the auspices of the National Priority Project «Public Health», by the order of the Government of the Russian Federation of March 20, 2006 a decision was made to construct the Federal Center of Neurosurgery in Tyumen in order to increase the accessibility of modern high-tech medical care for the people who need it. The Program ensured creation of 14 federal centres of advanced medical technologies: 7 specialized in cardiovascular surgery, 5 specialized in trauma, orthopaedics and prosthetics, and 2 specialized in neurosurgery (in Tyumen and Novosibirsk).

In 2009, the Government of the Tyumen region and the Government of the Russian Federation invited Prof. Albert Sufianov to participate in FCN construction, and In 2010, by the order of the Government of the Russian Federation, he was appointed a Chief physician and Medical director of FCN (Tyumen). Federal state-financed institution “Federal Centre of Neurosurgery” of Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation obtained medical license on December 31, 2010, and in early January 2011, the first patients received medical consultations here.

On April 25, 2011, Chief Physician Albert Sufianov and the surgical team successfully performed the first operation, which was ETV of the third ventricular floor on the 8 month old baby from Nizhnevartovsk with a severe form of internal obstructive hydrocephalus. The surgery was successful and since then, the date has been celebrated as the birthday of the Centre.

As a hospital of federal significance, FCN provides medical service in neurosurgery not only to residents of the Tyumen region, but also to the citizens of any part the Russian Federation. Convenient geographical position of Tyumen makes the Federal Centre accessible for the population of many regions of Russia.

Having headed the Centre Professor Sufianov formed a strong team of inspired, dedicated, energetic young and experienced specialists from 11 different regions of the Russian Federation.

The Centre’s claim of fame is minimally invasive surgery and preservation of life quality using advanced neurosurgical technologies.

Federal Centre of Neurosurgery has unique state-of-the-art equipment. For example, in autumn of 2013, exclusively in Russia, there was installed a 3D TRENION system. The first surgery with the use of a microscope with built-in 3D camera was performed on a patient with Arnold-Chiari malformation. In combination with a 3D Monitor installed in the OR, this device enables the surgeon not only to see but effectively share with the whole team brilliant three dimensional images.

In May 2015, again exclusively in Russia, the very first hybrid intellectual operating room with iCT scanner was set into service. It has made it possible to essentially improve the efficiency of surgical treatment in the most challenging surgical cases.

Nowadays, the operating capacity of the Centre has reached 3500 high-technology surgeries a year, about 800 of which are performed by Chief physician himself. In total, there have been more than 14 000 high-tech surgeries performed in the Centre within 5 years. FCN has become one of the world leaders in the number of high-tech operations in neurosurgery.

Together, cutting-edge technologies and equipment, new methods of treatment and education, qualified staff, cohesion of the teamwork and, consequently, thousands of successful surgeries performed and thousands of saved lives make the Center so special.
